Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

We're approved. I stressed a lot before, especially since we were missing my husband's birth certificate. Of course we found it in our mail box when we returned from the interview. He couldn't find his passport for an hour either last night.
We made our way to Charlotte this morning. The directions from google maps were accurated and we had no problem finding the place.
Coming from Tyron St you turn onto Tyvola Center Dr. The first sign to the right is the US Defense Department, then the next entrance to the right is the
USCIS. Lots of parking. Expect for us it was pretty much full because there was a naturalization ceremony at the same time.
We went through the door were security is. No cell phones allowed of course.
A lady in front of us had an appointment letter for biometrics, I felt bad for her as this is not the right location in Charlotte. There is a biometrics address and a main address, you need to check your appointment letter carefully.
Anyway, went through, were told to go to the room on the left if we had an appointment. There were quite a few people in there but it went pretty fast.
We arrived around 9:50am for a 10:30 appointment. At 10:45 a guy asked for our name and we followed him.

We took the oath to tell the truth.
Then he asked for our ID's, which I don't think he ever really looked at. Checked our names, birth dates and country of birth; then asked what document we had to prove our marriage. At first I though he only meant the marriage certificate, but it was actually also the utility bills, bank accounts and all. We gave all that.
He also asked for the last tax return.
Then he asked the classic questions: terrorist, prostitute and all the rest. I wasn't expecting him to ask pretty much all of them but he did.
Now don't ask me why, maybe because I find those questions stupid (who is going to say yes anyway), but it made me chuckle. My husband was nervous because he though I was going to screw up the interview because of it.
When the officer asked the question about the spy thing, I couldn't help myself (and I tried) from saying: No, I would be a pretty bad spy anyway. whistling.gif
Thankfully our officer had humor and it made him chuckle too. innocent.gif
He asked if I ever had a J-1, that one I said yes, so I gave him copies of the passport pages.
He then asked how we met. We asked if he wanted the long or the short version, he said it didn't matter, we gave the short one.
At that point he had already stamp approved on the paper biggrin.gif
The he noticed my husband's name and commented on it.
He then explained about the 2 year GC and that we had to remove conditions and all that stuff. I told him 90 days before the expiration date right? He was like "oh you already know about it". I told him I had done a bit of research (he he thanks VJ).
He then went on to talk about when he was in Germany in the 50's with Nato and how he went tot he Mess of the French and how it was so much more neat and that the French sure knew how to do it because the Mess always had beer; wine and bread and Chefs but that their meat was awful and too cooked not to mention that discussing with the French cooks he could never figure out what type of meat it was.
Before we left I offered him to look at our pictures (hey I didn't print those for nothing!) he say sure; went through quickly just mentioned how pretty western north Carolina is.
How and he stamped my passport, said it's good for a year and that if I don't have the green card in the mail within 3 months I should make an appointment and check if there is anything wrong. He also took the EAD and I-94.
Note: He never asked about my intent when I entered the US (I came with a B2).

It was pretty anticlimactic after a year of waiting, but gosh I'm happy it's over.
Oh and if you are hungry after that; I recommend driving North on Tryon St then taking a right on East Blvd until you see the restaurant La Cantina on the left. Great and very fresh Mexican food with a modern twist.

Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

We actually went to the Durham office, but the mods have not added Durham to the web site yet. So, for the time being, I have put this under Charlotte.

We arrived about 25 minutes early. The instructions on the USCIS web site on how to get to the new Durham office were pretty good, but the streets are a bit odd once you turn off Miami Blvd. The security there seemed moderate, and they wouldn't let us through until 15 minutes before our appointment time. I, the USC, had to wait in a separate waiting area and J, my wife, had to go into the biometrics waiting area. She filled out a form and took a seat. A little while later, she got called to do her fingerprints. Meanwhile, I sat in the other waiting room waiting and waiting and waiting...expecting her to come out any moment since most VJers said it takes about 5 minutes. Well, it took an hour...apparently J's fingerprints are not easily recordable or whatever. One bad thing I noticed is that while they have bathrooms there, there is NO water fountain!!!

Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

Didn't have to wait too long; brought in a BOX of stuff - photos of us, bills, bank statements, etc etc - big box. The woman who interviewed us was very pleasant. Asked to see a few of the papers (bank statements, mortgage info w/ both our name on it, etc) and that was it. It was over very quickly - we were surprised. We asked her why she didn't need to see more (she was very chatty) and she said it was because she could tell when we got there that we were married cause we wanted to be, and were happy. Said there's a big difference between couples who are trying to use the system, and those who just want to be together. On our way our, she saw our wedding photos and asked to see them - only cause she thought they looked nice! She had already done the paperwork and said we could go. Overall, it was quick and painless - just be prepared and bring all your stuff. She saw we were prepared, which definitely helped.

Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

We took to the interview

- bank statements
- job certificates from me and my wife
- shared life/car/medical insurance
- her us birth certificate certified copy
- our marriage certificate certified copy
- my birth certificate (+ translation)
- copies of AOS
- pictures (260)
- we have same credit card but we did not have a statement of any of them

We got there at 8.15 (interview at 8.30) we entered the building, 3 or 4 guards there (like in the airport) told us to pass all our stuff by a scanner..then we went to a waiting room with a tv showing CNN.

That door has 2 doors, one of them was the one we used for entering (of course hehe) the other was one that was being used by the immigration officers to call by applicant name. so a lady called me and my heart stopped and my hands were freezing

we went to her office, she made us swear ("raise your right hand and tell me that you are going to say the truth, etc) and then the interview started. She started asking my wife for her personal info (are you X and live on Y and you were born on Z, etc etc 5 or 10 minutes) same with me (are you X, and live on Y and were born in Z etc etc etc)

after that, she stared at me with her eyes WIDE OPENED and she said, ok i am going to ask you questions

are you a terrorist?
are you a spy for argentina? :-p
all those questions that are on the forms that we fill and we say no to all of them ... you know

i answered NO to all of them but her look scared me

she asked
- how we met
- if we both meet our parents/ parents in law, etc.
- then, after that, she asked if we rent/own (we own but the house is at her name) so we said no, but we showed the bank account, and a copy with all our credit cards/insurance (car/dental/vision/life/health/etc).
- Also she asked for pictures (I chose 260 pictures of thousands that we have (i printed at Rite Aid at 0.13$ each ) so she looked at all of the pics (we have pics in 3 countries, with family, etc etc)

- so after that, she said, I am going to approve you
- She stamped my passport with a 1-year temporary form signed by her with my A# number, date, etc.
- When I got home, I got the email of "your card was being ordered". So that's it

My conclusion: the interview is a lottery, it depends on who is going to call you, how nice (or not) the interview is going to be) but in any case, a nice smile and trying to be as much relaxed as possible is the best option i think.
